Oppressed by Privilege / Privileged by Oppression are the names of the two bands performing – simultaneously.
Oppressed by Privilege /
Privileged by Oppression is a collective project initiated by Daniela Brugger and Vera Bruggmann.
The names of the two bands are concept, as previous to any rehearsals, the public was invited by an open call to submit texts in response to the respective band names. The two bands, used the submissions as the raw material to adapt and interpret musically and later present the result on stage for the first time in June 2017 during the Art Fair in Basel. The lyrics inspired by the band names, the music on the other-hand influen- ced by the lyrics.
Three songs of each band found their way on a record. A record based on two sides, a host for several opinions. The artists question their roles as individuals in our capitalistic society and open up the ambivalent discussion about privilege and oppression.
The riot of the privileged took place a second and last time in February 2018 at Kunsthalle Basel, framed by the exhibition New Swiss Performance Now and the record release. This event marked the end of the bands but their voices will remain.
All original texts are compiled within a publication and available on Stingray Editions. The vinyl is available on A Tree in a Field Records.
